Goa, the popular tourist destination, has a drink of its own called Feni. Tourists often relate this drink with the region and it was introduced by the Portuguese, former colonial rulers of Goa.
Feni comes in two flavors; ‘Madachi’ and ‘Cajuchi.’ Madachi is brewed from the sap of tender coconuts while Cajuchi is derived from cashew apple. The process of preparing is similar with both raw materials. Juice of cashew fruit or coconut sap is fermented in a copper pot for about a week. The liquid is then distilled 2 to 3 times to produce a strong liquor called Feni. The distillation of coconut sap is done during the monsoon season, while that of cashew fruit is performed during the summer months.
