Drepung Gomang Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery established in the Gelug tradition, is located in a Tibetan colony at
Mundgod in
Uttara Kannada District of
Karnataka. The original monastery was founded in 1416 in Tibet. During the Chinese invasion of Tibet, its leaders were forced flee to India and they rebuilt the monastery in the present location.
The monastic college provides Buddhist education. The curriculum includes valid cognition, phenomenology, the perfection of wisdom and monastic discipline. There are nine camps for lay people, a school for lay Tibetans, hospital, medical center, nunnery, old age home, library, cafe and a guest hostel on its premises. Besides, the monastery imparts training in Tibetan arts and crafts for the young and provides job opportunities for both Tibetan and Indian people. Religious ceremonies are performed for the Tibetans.
Hubli is the nearest city, which is an hour's drive from Drepung Gomang Monastery. Hubli Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
