Drang

Drang is a small village in Baramulla District and is located near the spot where the Ferozpore Nallah enter into the open grounds from the high mountains. It is 3 km from Tangmarg.

The term 'Dranga' is attributed to the ancient name of Ferozpore, Karkota-dranga, which controlled the Tosamaidan route to Punch. In pre-muslim times, 'dranga' was used to refer to a frontier watch-station, put in place for the purpose of collecting customs duties and of generally safeguarding the frontier.

The village attained prominence due to the existence of an ancient temple, the deity of which is still unknown. Due to age and neglect it is more or less in a dilapidated state. The roof had caved in, filling the floor with large boulders, thus hiding the image enshrined completely. It is believed that this north-east facing temple once had a peristyle surrounding it but now only a double-chambered gateway remains. The temple measures 11' square internally while the external constructions resemble the Narastan temple.
