Dowleshwaram Dam is situated just 10 km from the scenic city of
Rajahmundry in
Andhra Pradesh. It was built by Sir Alfred Cotton, a British Engineer, in 1848-52. Earlier the
Godavari River, which had a width of over 6 km in the region, caused havoc during floods, resulting in extensive damage to the surroundings.
Now the canals and channels that fan out from the dam provides for irrigation.
