Dhurang or Dhuring is a major folk dance form of the Garhwal area, which comprises the Himalayan territories of
Uttar Pradesh,
Uttaranchal,
Himachal Pradesh and neighboring regions. This typically belongs to the Dom and Bhotia tribes and is related with their death ceremonies. Dhurang dancers hold swords and move vigorously in a circle. This is to liberate the souls of dead people believed to inhabit the bodies of goats or other animals. Dhurang Dance is similar to the pastorals of Himachal Pradesh and the hunting dances of the Nagas in north-east India.
