Dhepadhol, a traditional drum of
Assam, is known for its unique heavy sound. This is a cylindrical drum measuring 1.5 m in length, with a tapered left end.
While both ends are covered with animal hide in the conventional manner, the right end has double covering. Further adding to the uniqueness, there is a small hole on the outer layer. Water is poured through this hole to fill the gap between the skin layers. This water is the source of the drum’s unique sound.
Dhepadhol is mostly featured in the colorful Dhepa Dhuliya dance.
