Dhawa Wildlife Sanctuary, 45 km south-west from
Jodhpur, has the distinction of containing the largest number of chinkaras (Indian Gazelle). Other members in the sanctuary include black bucks and deer. Here one can find animals roaming freely without any threat from the poachers.
This extraordinary safety and freedom of the animals is attributed to the Bishnois, who inhabit the region. They have a custom of worshipping living beings and consider the killing of animals as a great crime. They personally see to it that no animals are poached in their land.
