A Buddhist stronghold, earlier known by the name Dharmapattanam, Dharmadom is a small town in
Kannur District,
Kerala. The town is situated on the National Highway connecting
Thalassery and Edakkad and is around 15 km from
Mahe and 17 km from
Kannur.
Thalassery, Edakkad, Mokeri,
Kottayam and
Muzhapilangadu are located nearby. Some of the tourist attractions around include
Thalassery River,
Thalassery Fort,
St Johns Church Thodikalam Shiva Temple and
Overbury's Folly.
The place is noted for the
Dharmadom Island, a beautiful beach island fringed with coconut palms and green bushes. This privately owned island is 100 m away from Dharmadom.
Regular bus services connect Dharmadom with Thalassery and Kannur.
Dharmadom Railway Station, on the Thalassery-Kannur rail route, serves this area.
