Devi Bhagawathi Temple




Devi Bhagawathi Temple is a highly revered shrine located at Kanyakumari, inTamil Nadu. The temple enshrines Goddess Bhagavathi as the presiding deity. The image of the Goddess, with a rosary in her right hand doing eternal penance, bestows on the devotee immense wealth of spiritual energy and peace of mind.

Devi Bhagawathi Temple also ahs shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Surya, Lord Ayyappa and Bala Sundari - the processional deity of the Goddess. On the northern end there is a small gopuram which leads one to the sanctum. The eastern entrance, facing the sea, will be open only for Aarattu rituals.

From the shores one can enjoy the magnificent sight of the sunrise and sunset. On the evening of the Chitra Poornima (April-May), people gather to watch the rare spectacle of the almost simultaneous occurrence of the sunset and moonrise. Vijayadashami, a day of triumph for the Virgin Goddess over Banasura, the king of demons, is celebrated here amidst much pomp and splendor. The 10-day Vaikasi Visakam and Navratri festivals are other major events which draw a large number of people from far and near.
