Deeg is a small town situated in the
Bharatpur District,
Rajasthan. It was the erstwhile summer resort of the rulers of Bharatpur. Built by Surajmal in the middle of the 18th century, it was the second capital of the region. The town is spotted with massive fortifications, beautiful gardens, magnificent palaces and a colorful bazaar. Deeg is about 152 km south-west of
New Delhi.
Steeped in history, it is the site of the famous battle in which the Bharatpur maharaja's forces withstood a combined Mughal and Maratha army of about 80,000 men. Major tourist attraction is the
Deeg Fort - constructed during the reign of Surajmal in 1730. Other tourist interest in and around the city include the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Mathura (35 km), the 14th century tomb of Tarang Sultan, a picturesque lake, a museum and several ancient mosques.
Deeg is well connected with Bharatpur, Agra and Delhi by road. The nearest railway station is at Bharatpur and the nearest airport is at Agra (54 km).
