Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, one of the oldest educational institutions of modern learning in India, is located in
Pune. A Deemed University, it promotes higher learning and research in Indology and social sciences.
The institute encompasses two teaching and research departments, namely, archaeology and linguistics. The linguistics department focuses on basic as well as applied aspects of language in general and on the analyses of the languages of the subcontinent. The archaeology department regularly conducts field research in various areas of archaeology in all parts of the country and also organizes seminars, workshops, conferences and refresher courses.
A semi-permanent project for the preparation of an Encyclopedic Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Principles is also housed within the institute. The library has more than 1,50,000 books, manuscripts and old and current journals. Two museums, namely, museum of the department of archaeology and Maratha history museum are found inside the institute.
