Dansborg, is a Danish fort at Tarangambadi (also,
Tranquebar) near Nagappattinam in
Tamil Nadu. The fort was part of the Danish occupation of the area from the 16th to late 19th century. This historical site is 35 km north of
Nagapattinam and 50 km from
Chidambaram.
The fort built in 1620 is a striking piece of Viking architecture. It has enclosing stonewalls and cannons facing the sea. The fort now functions as an archeological museum that exhibits weaponry and artifacts of the Danes. There are other equally interesting monuments near the fort such as the Danish Governor Bungalow just across it.
