Cortalim is an ancient village situated in
Salcette,
South Goa District. The village was earlier known as ‘Kushasthali’, a
Sanskrit word which means ‘a place where holy grass grew’.
Historians say that during the second half of the 16th century, Father Pedro Mascarenhas - the first Jesuit Missionary- crossed the Zuari River and found the first village of Cortalim. Major point of attraction here include Church of St Philip and St James and the Kavale Mutt, the oldest Mutt of the Saraswat Brahmins.
