Coimbatore in
Tamil Nadu is renowned for its brocaded
sarees. These sarees, woven from cotton, feature extensive brocade works on the borders and pallu (falling edge of saree). The central portions of the body feature plain texture or ‘bhutta’ (bud) patterns. Occasionally patterns are created with
Zari embroidery. These gold colored patterns are surrounded by frames made with colored thread needlework.
Traditionally the Coimbatore Brocade Sarees were woven with the original color of the cotton kept intact. Modern demands of the fashion world have brought about the addition of a range of colors to these sarees. These sarees are thin and light, with an elegance that matches the silk saree.
