Chitrangada was the son of King
Santanu, born to his second wife
Satyavati.
Vichitravirya was his younger sibling and
Bhishma, his elder step brother. After the death of Santanu, Chitrangada was crowned the new king of Hastinapuri, as Bhishma, the elder one in the line of inheritance, had already renounced all earthly pleasures and embraced
Brahmacharya.
During his reign of Hastinapuri, once Chitrangada went hunting in the forest, where he came across a gandharva also named Chitrangada. An argument over the sameness of names developed into a one-to-one fight that went on for three centuries at the end of which the prince got killed by the gandharva. The fight was on the fields of Kurukshetra. Later the kingdom was ruled by Vichitravirya.
