Located in
Kanyakumari District, Chitaral is 45 km northwest of
Kanyakumari and 5 km northeast of Marthandam town.
Chitaral has a hillock, with a huge cave containing Jaina rock-cut sculptures of 9th century. The images are of
Tirthankars and attendant deities. The sculptures are carved inside and outside of the cave. It was converted into Bhagavathi temple in the 13th century. But the Jaina images were not modified. Archaeological Survey of India has declared Chitaral as a protected site.
Chitral can be accessed from Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari and
Nagercoil.
