Chikankari is an embroidery work practiced in
West Bengal. It derives its name due to its resemblance to the Chikankari work of
Uttar Pradesh.
It involves the use of white cotton thread on fine white muslin fabric. The designs are very delicate. Though white thread is used on white cloth, an effect of light and shadow is created by varying the textures appropriately. A variety of silk, called moga, is used for outlining the embroidered portions to create an enhanced effect.
