Chidiya Diya is a traditional oil lamp of the Sarguja tribe of
Madhya Pradesh.
This hand-modeled lamp contains a detachable oil container shaped in the form of a bird. Wheels are attached to the lamp, facilitating its movement. The belly of the bird has a tubular opening containing a wick. The burning of the wick controls the oil flow. This ensures that there is no wastage of the oil.
Chidiya Diya is usually burned in the shrine dedicated to the Mother goddess. Hence, it is also called ‘Mata-diya’ or mother lamp.
