Chettiars, also known as Nagarathars (means ‘peoples living in towns’), are members of Hindu religion, belonging to the Chettinad region of
Tamil Nadu. Chettiars migrated to countries throughout South East Asia during the 19th Century. There are both Tamil and Telugu speaking Chettiars.
Traditionally involved in the occupations such as money lending, they are renowned for the introduction of a new concept of ‘Double Entry Bookkeeping’ (Pattru Varavu in Tamil), commonly known as Debit and Credit in English.
Chettiars are also well known for their artistic houses and tasty cuisine. Chettinad Chicken, a spicy chicken made by them, is their signature dish.
