Cheraman, popularly called Cherumakkal, is a backward community inhabiting areas in the southern states of India. They are mainly found in the state of
Kerala. The tribe members belong to the agricultural community of whom
Pulayas are more in number.
Cheramans have strong body type and dark complexion. In early days, the members were regarded as untouchables and not allowed to come in the mainstream of life. Due to this olden Hindu nobility, large numbers of people from this group are Christian converters.
