Charans, also known as Gadhvi, is a small community inhabiting the
Rajasthan and
Gujarat states in the western parts of India. Charans occupy a position between the
Brahmins and
Rajputs. Most of the Charans are converts from Rajputs, although there are Brahmin converts as well. They resembles the Rajputs by virtue of their language, dresses, traditions and culture.
In ancient time Charans were the keepers of livestock. Later in the medieval times they gained their relations with the ruling classes, particularly the Kshatriyas.
