Chandanakuda Mahotsavam is an important festival, held at Beemapalli, about five kilometers south-west of
Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, in
Thiruvananthapuram.
Chandanakuda Mahotsavam is held to commemorate the death anniversary of Beema Beevi, a Muslim lady believed to have divine power. It falls on Jamathul Akhir – the fifth month in the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts for ten days. Chandanakudams, earthen pots smeared with sandalwood paste and coins, are made as offerings on this occasion. Its neck is covered with a white cloth and a garland is tied around the neck.
Each day of the festival has its own significance and a large number of devotees, irrespective of caste and creed, assemble here on this occasion. Cultural art forms such as Dharamuttu and Vadithallu are staged during the festival. Processions led by caparisoned elephants and Panchavadyam are the other highlights. The festival culminates with an elaborate display of fireworks.
