Chan Lam

A Tribal Dance

Chan Lam, a tribal dance of Manipur, is performed only by the men. The costume of the dance consists of a colored loin cloth round the hip, scarf crossed at chest, the leggings white or colored and the men carry the dao or spear.

Nature has influenced most of the tribal dances of Manipur and Chan Lam is no exception. Men form a circle and move by taking a step forward and backward. This is accompanied by howls. After sometime, the dancers divide and then form a party dance in irregular pacing with quick music and the dance is finished with howls.
