Champaner, the erstwhile capital of Chauhan
Rajputs, is an ancient town situated at the base of the Pavagadh Hill in
Gujarat. Champaner, also called Champnari, is a famous pilgrimage center dotted with numerous religious monuments. Champaner is 47 km east of
Vadodara.
Champaner, now in ruins, shows the luxury and grace of the past. Archeological excavations in Champaner had revealed the engineering skills of the ancient times.
Major tourist attractions include Pavagarh Fort, Pavagadh Shakti Peeth, the Jama Mosque(famous for the beautiful carving with Filgiri art), Shaher ki Masjid, Nagina Mosque, Chauhan Rajputs monuments, Naulakha Kotha Mansion and the 11th century Laukalish Temple.
A major festival held annually at the foot of Pavagarh Hill, during the month of Chaitra (March/April), in honor of the Goddess Mahakali, is a major draw.
By road, Champaner is well-connected with Vadodara and Ahmedabad (159 km).
