Chakkamkulangara Shiva Temple is a highly revered shrine in
Ernakulam District of
Kerala. It is situated at
Chakkamkulangara, 8 km from
Ernakulam.
Shri Poornathrayeesa Temple is nearly half a kilometer south-west of this temple.
A peculiar feature of this temple is that its here the two temples, the Shiva temple and the Navagraha temple, are in the same compound. Devotees believe that worshipping Shiva and Saneeswara on Saturday will throw away worries and sorrows. A large crowd throng here on Saturdays to obtain blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple has a holy pond, where the arattu of Shri Poornathrayeesa is performed.
The temple celebrates Shivaratri, amid much pomp and splendor, as eight day long annual festival. The image of the deity is taken out in a big procession on the Shivaratri evening, accompanied by three tuskers, musicians and devotees. This grand festival also features a host of cultural programs such as ottanthullal and chakyarkoothu. Aarattu marks the conclusion of this festival.
