Kerala, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is one of the leading research institutions of its kind. Established by the Government of India in 1947, this institute carries out research works in the area of fisheries such as seafaring and techno-socio-economic evaluation of Mariculture operations.
The institute organizes MFSc and PhD programs under the Post Graduate Programme in Mariculture under the affiliation to the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, a Deemed University under the ICAR. Teaching programs are carried out by the scientists of the institute. Training programs are organized in fisheries, Mariculture, animal husbandry and other related subjects. Training is also given to the officials of the state government, banks, societies and other agencies interested in fisheries research, education and development.
Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has a well stocked library with houses over 60,000 volumes of books, periodicals and reports. The institute has a well equipped computer center and various research centers across the country.
