Central Institute of Fisheries Education, a Deemed University, is located in
Andheri(W) on the north-west coast of
Mumbai near the fishing village Versova, facing
Arabian Sea.
Established in 1961, its purpose was to impart postgraduate education and training to the in-service fisheries personnel of the country to provide trained manpower for the fisheries developmental activities. This first fisheries university of India came under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1979. It conducts education and research programs leading to postgraduate (MFSc) and doctoral degrees in specialized disciplines of fisheries science and technology.
There are five regional centers in different places which have education, research and training facilities.
