The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS), formerly known as the School of Buddhist Philosophy, is located at
Choglamsar, in
Leh District. Started in 1959, It is affiliated to the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University of
Varanasi.
Specializing in Buddhist education, the institute offers classes from standard VI to the doctorate degree level. Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Tibetan literature and Buddhist philosophy are compulsory in higher classes and modern subjects such as mathematics and general science are taught in smaller classes.
CIBS provides four special courses on local traditional arts and crafts such as amchi, thangka painting, sculpture and wood carving.
There are twenty-nine gonpa and nunnery schools under this institute at different parts of Ladakh.
