Cellular Jail, located at Aberdeen, was built in 1896 AD by the British. It took 14 years to complete the construction of the jail. This monument symbolizes the difficulties faced by the Indians to attain freedom from their colonial rulers and is preserved as a shrine to India's freedom fighters. The original building was split into seven, with a central tower as the center. There were four-storied wings with cells on the first three and a watchtower on the fourth. If you walk through the Jail Complex, you can see the execution room where prisoners were hanged, the shed where they worked at the oil press and the walls with hooks from which the prisoners were tied as punishment.
There is an art gallery, museum and martyrs' memorial. A sound and light show picturising the jail's brutal history is arranged every evening except Sundays.
