The Caves of Gandharpale, numbering to a total of 28, is situated on Gandharpale hills in
Raigad District. The caves are also known as Pale Caves.
The caves are four storied with each chamber having a height of 60 meters. All caves are east facing and are numbered from south to north in ascending order. The magnificence of ‘Ghatikayantra' style of architecture can be seen every where. First cave has an image of Lord Buddha whittled on a pillar while a dilapidated stupa found inside the 9th cave has beautifully chiseled images. A half finished Stupa in the 15th cave and benches and sitting arrangements meticulously built in the 16th cave are noteworthy. Inscription in the Brahmi script are found in the 27th cave.
Gandharpale Village lies on the National Highway 17 and is near Mahad.
