Causatthi Ghat

Causatthi Ghat is one among the numerous ghats in Varanasi. The name ‘causatthi’ is derived from the word ‘chausatha’, which means 64. This indicates the number of yogonis (assistant goddesses) of the mother goddess. The Chausatthi Devi Temple of mother goddess is located nearby. Madhusudana Sarasvati, a renowned Sanskrit scholar of medieval times is said to have visited the ghat. The ghat was renovated in 1670 by the king of Udaipur. Causatthi Ghat attracts a heavy influx of devotees in the New Moon day of the Hindu month of chaitra (March-April). On this day the pilgrims visit the Chausatthi Devi Temple and take a dip in the holy waters of Ganges River. Another important occasion observed here is the colorful festival of Holi. People ascend the stairs of the ghat and make symbolic offerings to their ancestors in the holy river.
