Established in 1948, Calico Museum of Textiles is one of the leading museums in
Ahmedabad of
Gujarat. It is housed in two levels, of which one floor exclusively features the textiles of religious significance and the other displays traditional court fabrics, tents, carpets and costumes.
There are separate galleries to house the articles related to Vaishnavism and Jainism. Popular of the Vaishnavism collections is a replica of a small reconstructed Pustimarga shrine with an idol of Srinathji. This image is covered with a painted textile. Pichhwais and textiles, which belonged to the Vallabha sect, are the other attractions. Among the Jain collections are Thirtha chitras,
yantras, painted wooden ceiling of derasarai and important manuscripts such as kalpasutra and kalakakatha.
Also displayed are embroidered and decorated shamianas, sarees, Phulkaris from Punjab and Kalamkaris from Andhra Pradesh.
