Bumlahut

Heap of Stones

Bumlahut or ‘Heap of Stones’ is the frontier post of India situated on the Mc Mohan Line or the Line of Actual Control (LAC), along the Indo - China border. It is 37 km from Tawang and around 4500 km from Beijing. The Tsonadzong province of China adjoins the Line of Actual Control.

As the snow covered road climbs from Tawang at 10,000 ft to Bumla at 15,500 ft, one would come across historical spots like Maratha ground, Y Junction and PTSO Lake, each carrying a baggage of history of its own.

The Maratha ground is symbolic to the Maratha Light Infantry unit, who were the first to come and establish a proper infrastructure here. From the Y Junction the road bifurcates while PSTO Lake bears the name of a lady Chinese engineer who had apparently supervised the construction of the Bumla-Tawang road with the aid of Tibetan conscripts.

Tawang is a suitable base for those venturing to the border post, though such journey is highly restricted.
