Buland Darwaza

Buland Darwaza is the gateway to the walled city of Fatehpur Sikri. This awe-ispiring monument is a real treat to travellers and tourists to Agra. The darwaza rises to a height of 40 m above the ground. It is the first thing that catches the sight of travellers from a distance.

The darwaza (meaning 'door') was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Khandesh (in Gujarat) in 1573. It is undoubtedly one of the most important monuments built by Akbar. The ornamentaion of the structure is simple. Verses from the Koran are carved on it.
