Buland Darwaja, also known as the gate of victory, is one of the landmarks of
Agra. It is the main entrance of
Fatehpur Sikri.
This gate was built by Akbar in 1601. It was constructed to memorize his victory over Khandesh and Ahmednagar in Southern India.
Buland Darwaja is about 54 m high. The calligraphy over the gate has been carved on marble and sandstone panels, which frame the main arch. These inscriptions are the verses from Quran, and possess religious significance. Geometric patterns add to the beauty.
