Among the
Puranas, the Brahma Purana stands first and therefore it also known as ‘Adi Purana.’ It is in the form of teachings by Brahma to
Marichi and has around 10,000 verses.
It deals on length about the Hindu mythology of world creation, birth of Manu and his descendents, birth of gods and demigods, descriptions of earth and its different sections, of hells and heavens, of holy places. A large portion of the text describes the holy places of Orissa.
It is believed that one will attain swarga (heaven) if Brahma Purana along with Jaladhenu, is gifted to anyone on the full-moon day in the month of Vaisakha (May).
