Bohaggiyo Bishu is the spring festival of the
Deoris tribes of
Assam. Bishu has been derived from the Chutiya word 'Bisu': 'Bi' meaning extreme and 'Su' meaning to rejoice.
It falls annually in April on the Sankranti day and lasts for seven days. Puja, accompanied by several rituals, is performed on this occasion. An important ritual is the sacrifice of a white buffalo once in four years, which is considered a substitute for the traditional human sacrifice.
Bohaggiyo Bishu is celebrated with much pomp and splendor in the regions of Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Nagaon. The highlights of the festival are Deobhani dance and husori or coral song party.
