Bohag Bihu is celebrated in
Assam in the month of Bohaag (April), the first month of the Assamese calendar and thus marks the advent of the Assamese New Year.
The first day of the festival is called ‘garu bihu’. On this day, the cattle are given a bath, fed with brinjals and gourds. Turmeric is applied on them and they are tied with new ropes.
Second day of the festival, known as ‘manush bihu’, is the New Year day of Hindus. People wear new clothes on this day. Special food is prepared and a feast is held. Near and dear ones are offered food and gifted with hand-woven scarves.
The festivities, which continue for 7 days, include activities like dancing, singing and drinking beer prepared from rice. Bohaag Bihu is also called the Rongali Bihu.
