Bidar, the administrative headquarters of the
Bidar District, is situated 700 km from
Bangalore, in the far north-eastern corner of
Karnataka. Situated on the brink of a plateau, the town enjoys a picturesque view of the north-eastern terrain and a pleasant climate.
Steeped in history, it was the capital of the Bahmani dynasty in the 15th century. Later it became the center of power for the Barid Shahi kingdom. Bidar occupies a prominent place in the historical and religious map of the country. It is an important pilgrim center for the devotees of Guru Nanak. There are several perennial springs in the outskirts of the town, which are linked with various religions. Bidar also had been an important center for learning since time immemorial.
Bidar is situated at the tri-junction of the three states -
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This place is renowned for its Bidriwork. Major attractions include the Bidar fort, Solah Khamba Masjid, Bahamani Tombs and the Gagan Mahal.
The nearest airport is at Hyderabad. Bidar Railway Station is a railhead of South Central Railways. Bidar Bus Station has services to Hyderabad (136 km), Bangalore (669 km), Bijapur (246 km) and Gulbarga (110 km).
