Bibi Nanaki(1464 -1518) is a revered female personality in Sikh history. She is better known as the elder sister of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. She was the first person to recognize her brother’s spiritual powers. She was also his first devotee. Her love towards her brother is celebrated in various folklores of
Punjab.
Guru Nanak, who lacked any interest in worldly affairs owing to his spiritual ways, always invited the wrath of his father. It was Bibi Nanaki who always came to his rescue. His radically different thoughts and ways of living were supported by her. In his adulthood, she arranged his marriage. She looked after his sons as her own.
Guru Nanak, who undertook long journeys for preaching the Sikh religion, never failed to visit his sister. She was fortunate enough to breathe her last in his presence.
