Biates Tribe

Biates Tribe members inhabit North Cachar Hills District. They are believed to be an offshoot of the Lushai-Kuki-Chin group. Biates are believed to have migrated from Central China and settled in the northern part of Mizoram. The immigrants who came after them, forced the Biates to move to the present residing area, called North Cachar Hills. The Biates possess their own dialects and customs.

The Cemchoikut, Pamcharkut, and Lahangkut are the main agricultural festivals. On these festive occasions Biates perform traditional dances. The dancers wear their traditional dresses and ornaments. The Buontumlam, Kolrikhelam, Rikifacholam, Partonlam, Sulribum-lam, Thingpuilethluk-lam, Meburlam and Darlam are the main dance forms of the Biates.
