The members of the Bhopa community are traditional singers and narrators of folklores in
Rajasthan. They belong to the
Marwar region, which lies in parts of
Jodhpur and
Nagaur districts. For the narration, this community uses the
Phad paintings. This community visits various villages for the performance.
The narrator uses a stringed musical instrument, called ravanahatha, while describing the scenes from the scroll paintings. The narration is accompanied by dancing and singing, which continues throughout the night. The recital of the tales is done in a very dramatic manner, holding the audience spellbound throughout the performance.
