Bharuch is the fourth major cotton-growing district in the state of
Gujarat. It covers an area of 9,038 sq km. The town
Bharuch is the headquarters. It is probably the oldest town in Gujarat and is a historic port.
Ankleshwar, Jhagadia teerth,
Jambusar, Suklatirth, Aliabet, and
Dahej Port are the other important places.
Suklatirth is a famous holiday spot. The grand Kartika Full Moon fair is held here near the sacred Narmada river. Kabirvad Island is nearby and well known for its giant banyan tree. The most important timber trading center Rajpipla is located in the eastern part of Bharuch District. Bharuch is also famous for the greatest oilfields in India. An interesting place to visit nearby is the Sloth Bear sanctuary at Dhumkal, which shelters the tiger and leopard.
