Bhartrihari Caves are situated just above the bank of the
Shipra River near the
Gadkalika Temple, in
Ujjain,
Madhya Pradesh. There is a small temple inside the cave.
It is believed that it was the spot where Bhartrihari, said to be the step-brother of Vikramaditya, lived and meditated after repudiating worldly life. He was a great scholar and a renowned poet. Most of his works are known for the delicate use of Sanskrit. His famous works include Shringarshatak, Vairagyashatak and Nitishatak.
The ancient site of Pir Matsyendranath is situated nearby.
Ujjain Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead. The nearest airport is at Indore.
