One of the premier research institutes in
Pune, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute was established in 1917 to commemorate Shri Ramakarishna Gopal Bhandarkar, a pioneer in scientific orientology. The institute has a Mahabharata research unit, department for manuscripts, publication department and post-graduate teaching and research department. The institute has published critical editions of the
Mahabharata and the
Harivamsa. Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute has a museum which houses a collection of nearly 20,000 manuscripts.
