Bhagyavanthi Temple is situated at Phattaragi in the
Gulbarga District of
Karnataka. Goddess Bhagyavanthi is the presiding deity. This 800-year-old temple is famous for its strange sidiyata ritual conducted to please the presiding deity. Local legends say that long years ago, a saint arrived at the place. He prepared an agnikunda (fireplace) and danced on the fire. Inspired by his strength of devotion, the villagers also started to worship in this manner. The temple still practices this ritual of piercing one’s body. During this Agni Utsav, a large number of devotees from far and near visit this temple.
