The Battle of Talikota was fought between the combined forces of the Sultanates of the Deccan region and those of the Vijaynagara Empire in 1565.
The Vijaynagara Empire was ruled by Rama Raya. He was able to restore the power of Vijayanagara which had declined during the rule of the successors to Krishnadeva Raya. Rama Raya interfered in the quarrels of the Sultanates of the Deccan and Central India such as the Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, Golconda and Bihar. He gained by alternately taking sides with either of the parties. When the Sultanates reconciled their differences, Rama Raya’s deviousness became obvious. The Sultanates then joined together against Vijayanagara. The excesses committed on Muslims by Rama Raya during his campaigns helped consolidate their alliance. The Sultanates faced Vijayanagara in the Battle of Talikota. The forces of Vijayanagara were thoroughly beaten. Rama Raya was killed in the battle. The victorious forces ransacked the capital of Vijayanagara and left it in ruins. The glory of Vijayanagara ended with the battle of Talikota.
