The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, one of the biggest and tallest churches in India, is centrally situated at
Thrissur. Spread over an area of 25000 sq ft, this church was constructed in 1940 with the blessings of Maharaja of Cochin, His Excellency Rama Varma. The church has two towers in front and one at the rear called the Bible Tower. The towers at the front are 146 ft tall and the rear tower is 260 ft in height. All these towers are built in the Gothic style.
Visitors get a panoramic view of Thrissur from the top of the towers. The church also houses 8 music bells, imported from Germany, which produce seven musical notes. The cemetery named Septic-cell model cemetery, beneath the main altar, is considered as the largest of its kind in India. Thousands of devotees arrive here to pray at the Perpetual Adoration Centre.
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, about 60 km from here. Thrissur Railway Station is the nearby railway station.
