Bargeets




Bargeets is a popular form of devotional song native to Assam. Sankaradeva and his disciple Madhavadeva is jointly credited with the composition of the song.

The literal meaning of 'Bargeet' is great songs. It is composed in an artificial language called Brajavali. The song has its own system of ragas and style of presentation. Bargeet is set using several ragas including Ahir, Asowari, Dhanashri and Kalyan. Vaishnava monasteries are the flag bearers of this kind of song today.

Instruments like flute, violin and tanpura are used in Bargeets.
