Barakuru

An ancient port town, Barakuru is located on the banks of the river Sita. The Arabian Sea is 3 miles to the east. The broadness of the delta of Sita had helped Barakaru to emerge as a major port. It had become a commercial center even before 2nd century BC. Barakuru has lost all its glory and now only the ruins of the past remains. Old fort and palace, Padarasabavi (well of mercury), Island of Bennekudru, ruins of Hinguladevi temple are the major attractions. There several other minor forts and temples at Barakuru. Barkur is 15 km north of Udupi, which lies on the national Highway 17 connecting Karwar to Mangalore.
